Teruel

The capital of the province of Teruel is Teruel. The province of Teruel occupies the south of Aragon, settled in the Iberian System, presents an orography of contrasts between plains and mountains. The average altitude is high for that reason its extreme climate in winter and summer. The past has left abundant traces: extinct saurians, archaeological remains, cave paintings, and Iberian and Roman sites. Architecturally, Teruel has the best monuments of Mudejar art in all of Aragon, both the capital and Montalbán, Alcorisa and Híjar.

Teruel, the capital, is located at 915 m. on a terrace overlooking the Turia river. The Muslim chronicles of the 10th century already speak of an important population nucleus. There are several Mudejar towers: El Salvador, San Martín, San Pedro and the Cathedral, with the famous coffered ceiling. Its remarkable modernist buildings are from the beginning of the 20th century.

Other regions are the Jiloca valley on the road from Teruel to Zaragoza (Gallocanta lagoon); the Montalbán mountain range and the mining basin, rich in paleontological deposits and Mudejar art; the lowlands of the Ebro valley and the Matarraña basin where the best oil and excellent peaches are produced, whose capital is Alcañiz, endowed with Gothic and Renaissance monuments; the Maestrazgo, which takes its name from the masters of the cavalry orders and was a refuge for Carlism, with towns steeped in history: Iglesuela del Cid and Mirambel; for snow enthusiasts the Gúdar-Javalambre region and its historic center in Mora de Rubielos; and finally, the Sierra de Albarracín, the city that gives it its name, is a first-rate historical-artistic complex: the Cathedral, the Episcopal Palace and the Walls.
